He has to believe that this—that these things that appeared not to be working today will work, that he won't have to start his life anew again (or at least not in a bigger way than he's having to do anyway). If he didn't believe this, he might consider hanging himself from the ceiling by his suspenders.3)

None of the above includes (but certainly could): the supposedly fish dinosaur that is so obviously a bird, irgendwas gibt es immer zu tun, das Bildnis von Elsbeth, and that German uses the same word for both rind and bark (and how that's not as crazy as part of my mind would like to think).
