Things I Saw and/or Heard Today

In town:

  • Three children under the age of 7, piling out of a small mobile home, pausing before crossing the street, whooping like Native Americans in films, and each naked as a jaybird.

  • A heron stab its beak into a stream and then swallow the fish in about five gulps (still in town).

  • Bill Callahan sing "we can't fly," just as I saw some graffiti which read, "fly high!"

In the forest:

  • This:

(Did you know fawns make this sound?)

  • And then, 15 minutes later, this:

(Did you know that deer bark like dogs?)

  • A desk chair in a hunting stand.

  • A cuckoo.

  • This:

Back in town:

  • Spalding Gray's monologue Monster in a Box.
