An Experiment, pt. 3

I noticed the single, black hair on his nose the moment we sat down to coffee. We talked about words, and sentences, and paragraphs. I couldn't stop looking at the hair. It wasn't long enough simply to reach out and remove, but it was too long to ignore.

What happened in the red, '92 Toyota Corolla hatchback with a spoiler, black leather interior, green hood, and a dent in the right-front quarter panel shaped exactly like Ronald Reagan's face? What happened?

Is the wind up here on the hill worse than it might be down in the valley?

Eventually, he ran his hand across his face, and moved the hair from his nose to his lower lip, where it sat and wobbled slightly as he spoke.

The biggest problem American minds have with the metric system, especially in terms of length, is this: Americans think in inches, feet, and miles; Europeans think in centimeters, meters, and kilometers. Inches are longer than centimeters. Feet are shorter than meters. Miles are, again, longer than kilometers. The relationship is therefore twisted, and difficult to reconcile. Distances expressed in meters always seem ridiculously short.

A word starting with the letter P blew the hair from his lip and into his coffee, where it floated while he continued to talk about the length of German sentences.

93 miles per hour is 150 kilometers per hour, which seems much faster.
