apposition
The OED defines the word apposition these ways: 1. The action of putting or placing one thing to another; application. †2. That which is put to or added; an addition. 3. The placing of things in close superficial contact; the putting of distinct things side by side in close proximity. 4. The fact or condition of being in close contact, juxtaposition, parallelism.
It is different from juxtaposition in that it is more (as you can see above, apposition contains juxtaposition).
Harper's Weekly (an email news review to which you can subscribe by visiting this link or this link) is particularly adept at apposition. Here is a good example:
Jack "Dr. Death" Kevorkian, who participated in more than 130 assisted suicides before a 2000 murder conviction, died of natural causes at 83, and Queenie, the world's only waterskiing elephant, was euthanized at 59.
